When a salary stops, the next loan instalment can quickly become the most urgent household expense. For borrowers in Dubai, a useful hardship request connects three things: evidence of the income change, an honest budget, and a specific proposal. A vague request for "more time" gives the bank less information to assess.
Standard 5.2.4.1 of the CBUAE Consumer Protection Standards requires qualified debt counselling and reasonable consideration of alternative repayment arrangements when a borrower seeks help. Fair consideration does not guarantee approval of a particular proposal. Ask to speak with the team handling financial difficulties or restructuring, and explain whether you need a short bridge to a confirmed new job or a longer adjustment to reduced income โ these are different affordability problems and deserve different proposals.
The following are options to request, subject to your bank's assessment and the conditions of the facility. Ask which are available for your particular loan.
Build a request that the bank can assess without repeatedly asking for missing information. The checklist below is a practical preparation guide; your lender may require its own forms or additional documents.
Banks use the debt burden ratio to compare monthly debt commitments with income when assessing further finance, and lending remains subject to bank approval. A lower advertised monthly payment is therefore not proof that a consolidation application will be accepted. For your own planning, test the proposed payment against the income you actually have now, and keep an emergency allowance for essential costs.
Standard 5.2.4.4 of the CBUAE Consumer Protection Standards requires written disclosure within 10 complete business days after a revised arrangement is agreed, covering the revised schedule, allocation between interest or profit and the balance, and disclosure that arrears reporting must reach the credit information agency. This is a post-agreement disclosure deadline, not a deadline for approving an application.
Consider this hypothetical comparison โ arithmetic only, not a bank offer or a prediction that either arrangement will be available. An existing schedule of AED 3,000 a month over 24 months totals AED 72,000. A proposed schedule of AED 2,200 a month over 36 months totals AED 79,200. The proposal reduces the monthly payment by AED 800 but increases the sum of instalments by AED 7,200, before any separately charged fees. Compare both monthly affordability and total cost before deciding.
Before committing an expected gratuity or final salary to the proposal, confirm when it will arrive and whether you can access it. If the bank indicates that it will apply or restrict funds, request its contractual basis and an itemised explanation.
The Central Bank directs complaints about licensed financial institutions to Sanadak, the financial and insurance ombudsman. Start by making a formal complaint to your bank and keeping its acknowledgement. Sanadak's current eligibility page requires 15 calendar days to have passed after that complaint, and you may then be eligible if no written response arrived or you remain dissatisfied โ subject to its criteria, since matters already before a court and complaints materially concerning internal pricing or risk-management policies can fall outside the process. Filing an initial complaint with Sanadak is free for consumers.
